Residential solid waste collection in the French Quarter occurs seven days a week, between 4:00am and 10:00 am.  Properties may not leave containers or bags on public rights-of-way between the hours of 10:00am and 4:30pm. Solid waste must not exceed the volume limit (35 gallon cart supplied by Progressive or a fastened, 3 ply, thick, black bag)

Debris Removal: Bulky Waste (includes appliances, furniture, mattresses, up to 4 tires, carpet (less than 4′ long, rolled and tied), trees (less than 4′ long/bundled Residential Only 1 day/week by appointment with SDT, 4:00am-9:00am Wednesdays by appointment for eligible addresses.Otherwise by private contract or special arrangement. Commercial units are not eligible.

Debris Removal: Curbside

Residential 7 days/week, 1x/day, 4:00am-10:00am Eligible FQ addresses. City solid waste must not exceed the volume limit (35 gallon cart supplied by City or a fastened, 3 ply, thick, black bag, if a waiver from the Department of Sanitation is obtained).

Debris Removal: Curbside

Commercial 7 days, 2x/day 4:00am-10:00am and 5:00pm-8:00pm Eligible FQ small businesses. Solid waste must not exceed the volume limit (35 gallon cart supplied by City  or fastened, 3 ply, thick black bag if a waiver has been obtained from the Department of Sanitation). Cardboard boxes are not to be used as waste containers.
Curbside Recycling Both Weekly, Tuesday 4:00am Eligible FQ & DDD units.  18-gallon recycling bins should be placed curbside no earlier than 7:00pm each Monday, but before 4:00am Tuesday to ensure pick-up.

Removal of Illegal Debris: Curbside

Both 7 days/week The City removes illegal debris remaining curbside from addresses not eligible for collection by the vendor. $150-$5000 fines are imposed.
Debris Removal: Public Litter Cans Both 7 days/week 7:00am-3:00pm. Commercial area of French Quarter 3:00pm-11:00pm

The contractor is to clean the litter can and liner at every collection.

The contract includes a supplemental Litter Can Patrol that is responsible for

  • Proper placement/positioning of cans
  • Cleaning/sanitizing each can minimum of three times/week
  • Replacement of plastic liners
  • Waste removal from cans from 7:00am to 3:00pm
  • Commercial area of French Quarter night collection from cans 3:00pm-11:00pm
  • Residents and businesses should not place trash generated from their properties in public litter cans. City Code requires that solid waste be placed in front of the unit that generated the waste.
Enforcement Commercial and Residential NOPD Quality of Life Officers and a Sanitation Ranger handle enforcement. The Department of Sanitation partners with other Departments as well as state and federal regulatory agencies to handle enforcement.
