On behalf of VCPORA, we invite you to step into a world of myth, majesty, and  meaningful celebration at ‘Olympian Revelry: Toast the Past. Preserve the Future,’ our annual gala in support of historic preservation in the French Quarter. Held within the storied halls of the historic New Orleans Athletic Club, this divine evening will channel the spirit of Mount Olympus, with flowing wine, decadent fare, celestial entertainment, and guests adorned in Hellenistic glamour. As Dionysus would insist: Revel with Purpose! Your presence and generosity help protect the cultural    legacy, architecture, and livability of one of the world’s most extraordinary neighborhoods. Join us on October 19th, 2025 for a night where legends come to life, and every toast helps preserve history.

Ladies Dress

Like the peplos, the chiton was fashioned from a single sheet of material folded across the body. The garment could be sewn completely along the top of the arms, leaving only a small hole for the head or neck. Alternatively, the chiton could be left sleeveless and, like the peplos, be pinned just over the shoulders. Unlike the heavy wool peplos, however, the chiton was made of a lighter material, such as linen or silk, and it had no distinctive overfall element at the top.

Gentleman's Dress

For men, a chiton is simply two large rectangles of wool or linen sewn together (or easier still, one larger rectangle folded over). As a rough guide, the unbelted chiton should reach from elbow to elbow (with your arms outstretched), and from chin to knee. Usually, both sides are completely sewn up, with the armholes in the top edge, not at the sides. The top is typically pinned (or sometimes sewn) together at two points on either side of the neck hole.

Another style has each side sewn up, with the arm-holes on the sides. This gives the impression of having short sleeves.

Olympian Revelry

In ancient Greek religion and myth, Dionysus is the god of wine-making, orchards and fruit, vegetation, fertility, festivity, insanity, ritual madness, religious ecstasy, and theatre. He was also known as Bacchu by the Greeks (a name later adopted by the Romans) for a frenzy he is said to induce called baccheia. His wine, music, and ecstatic dance were considered to free his followers from self-conscious fear and care, and subvert the oppressive restraints of the powerful

Wine was a religious focus in the cult of Dionysus and was his earthly incarnation. Wine could ease suffering, bring joy, and inspire divine madness. Festivals of Dionysus included the performance of sacred dramas enacting his myths, the initial driving force behind the development of theatre in Western culture. The cult of Dionysus is also a “cult of the souls”; his maenads feed the dead through blood-offerings, and he acts as a divine communicant between the living and the dead.He is sometimes categorised as a dying-and-rising god.
