Quarter Kaleidoscope: Oral History Project

About the Project

The Historic BK House & Gardens and The Vieux Carre Property Owners, Residents, and Associates (VCPORA) are embarking on a community history project together to document and celebrate the things that have made the French Quarter such a functioning and living neighborhood for so long.

Join the Project

We are gathering testimonials (in written, video, or audio format) and images or artifacts to include in this project. They will be used for a special 3-part presentation series taking place in the Fall of 2024 and a potential exhibit to follow. Based on the content collected, each evening of the presentation series will be centered on a different theme and topic (i.e. kids in the French Quarter or businesses that served the community).

Storytelling Events

Please join us for an evening of captivating tales that reveal the rich, personal histories woven into the very fabric of the Quarter, reminding us all that this place is more than just a destination—it’s a living, breathing community.

On December 11th, we are premiering the first of this year’s 3-part series based on collected content, including pictures, personal stories, and artifacts. The event will be at Bk House and you can purchase tickets on bkhouse.org

French Quarter Journal

“Pessimistically, it’s documenting a dying neighborhood so people can see the consequences of over-tourism and highlighting tourists’ needs over residents’.  Because what is the French Quarter if there aren’t people living here?”

About the Hosts

The Historic Bk House & Gardens is a National Historic Landmark built in 1826. This architectural treasure is an outstanding example of a raised center hall villa and includes both Creole and American features in an elaborately detailed residence. BK House’s diverse history includes the stories of those who both lived and labored here for nearly 200 years, offering a unique educational experience to visitors, which furthers the understanding of New Orleans history. The house, parterre garden and lovely courtyard have been featured in several films and television shows and are favorites for guided tours, weddings, and special events.

VCPORA is a nonprofit organization that advocates for the preservation and protection of the Vieux Carré as an international historic treasure, a major cultural and economic asset, and a living residential neighborhood that is valued and respected by all.
