Air Rights at City Hall TOMORROW

City Council Governmental Affairs Committee

Thursday, April 27 1:00 pm Council Chambers (1300 Perdido Street)

Just over a month ago, the City Council’s Governmental Affairs Committee held a public meeting to allow the administration to present its position on air rights – the practice of compelling annual payments and indemnification on encroachments such as stoops, galleries, eaves, balconies, etc., even those that have been part of our buildings and streetscapes for centuries. The pushback from the public was as broad as it was deep. Citizens from all walks of life and across the city showed up to voice opposition. The administration took note, and said they’d take a look at the policy to see what changes might be made.

Tomorrow, they’ll offer an update.

VCPORA has been on top of this issue for years. We strongly believe that architectural elements such as stoops, galleries, eaves, balconies, etc. are a benefit to the city’s residents as well as our tourism industry. In the French Quarter, they’re very much a part of our tout ensemble, but the same could be said for Marigny, Treme, Bywater, the CBD, Warehouse District, Mid-City, Magazine Street, and numerous other parts of town where buildings sit snugly against the sidewalk. Charging property owners for parts of their buildings that they bought, maintain, and pay taxes on is unfair and punitive. We hope that the administration will have come to the same conclusion.

If you can, please attend tomorrow’s meeting!
